McKenzie Nelson (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) scored in the 82
nd minute to tie the contest at 1-1 and then had the deciding penalty kick in the shootout to give the Saints the Chalice in their annual rivalry game with the University of Wisconsin-River Falls on Wednesday.
How It Happened
The Falcons (4-5-1) held the lead at the half with a goal in the 21
st minute. River Falls had an 8-6 advantage in shots in the first 45 minutes.
It remained 1-0 until the 82
nd minute as Nelson, who had just check back in, scored the equalizer with an assist from
Morgan Friday (Duluth, Minn./Shattuck St. Mary's HS) to make it 1-1.
90 minutes was not enough as the contest went to overtime. In the first overtime, both teams had one shot on goal, which were both stopped. The Saints then had chances in the second overtime, but the contest would end in a 1-1 draw.
Why PKs
However, since there is a traveling trophy involved, penalty kicks would decide who takes home the Chalice. CSS led 3-2 after four rounds, but the Falcons would stop the clincher for the Saints and answer with a conversion to send it into sudden death kicks tied at 3-3. Nelson then stepped up and made her attempt. Goalkeeper
Brianna Jorgenson (Columbia Heights, Minn./Columbia Heights HS) then stopped River Falls' attempt to give the Saints the Chalice 4-3 in penalty kicks.
Goalkeeping
