DUBUQUE, Iowa (csssaints.com) – After a delayed start to the season, the St. Scholastica volleyball team took on Grinnell College (Iowa) and Loras College (Iowa) in the Loras Invite on Friday. Unfortunately, the Saints fell in both matches and began their long-awaited season.

Grinnell 3, CSS 1
Set one was a game full of back and forth rallies and momentum swings, but the Pioneers (8-6) scored six of the last nine points in the set, winning 25-22.

The second set however was a different story. The Saints jumped out to an early 6-3 lead, only for Grinnell to match the score at 10. CSS then scored 10 of the next 13 points to give them a 20-13 lead where they would clean house on the second set, winning 25-18.

The Pioneers jumped out to an early 10-4 lead in set three. A push by the Saints made the game close where Grinnell led 20-16, but the Pioneers held on to win set three, 25-20.

Set four saw both teams clawing at one another for the lead with the score being tied 11-11 at one point. Grinnell however, broke the game open taking a 18-13 lead in the set. From there, the Pioneers ran with their momentum and took the deciding fourth game 25-16, winning the match.

Jessica Remer (Grand Forks, N.D./Sacred Heart HS) led the Saints with 19 kills. Caitlin Schneeweis (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS (Mary)) also added 11 kills in her first action as a Saint. Katie Brostrom (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake HS) added 38 assists, while Alcia Draper (Williams, Minn./Lake of the Woods HS) recorded 35 digs.

Loras 3, CSS 0
In the final match of the season opener, the Duhawks (9-1) took care of the Saints in a three-game sweep 25-17, 25-22, and 25-21.

Remer again led the Saints in kills with 10, while Haley Rohwer (Norwood Young America, Minn./Mayer Lutheran HS) added eight kills. Brostrom also led the Saints in assists with 10 and Draper led CSS in digs with 22.
