DULUTH, Minn. (
csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's soccer team scored a goal in each half and kept Saint John's University off the scoreboard to win by a 2-0 margin on Wednesday at Saints Field to begin its 2021 season.
How It Happened
The Saints came out looking to get an early goal in the opening minute, but
Ken Pryde's (Fareham, England/Barton Peveril College) shot off a corner just sailed above the target. CSS goalkeeper
Liam Lothian (Redditch, England/RSA Academy Arrow Vale) then stopped a pair of Johnnie attempts before
Nolan Friday (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) was able to beat the goalkeeper in the 27
th minute to make it 1-0.
Jordan Finneran (Newmarket, England/Cambridge Regional College) and
Finigan Huffington (Georgetown, Cayman Islands/John Gray HS) had the assists.
Saint John's had another great scoring attempt in the 38
th minute, but Lothian reached up and tipped the strike over the goal to preserve the 1-0 lead.
The second half saw the Johnnies come out and control possession for the opening 10 minutes, but could not get a look at the goal. CSS would get a free kick in the 59
th minute, just inside of midfield and
Arseno Hamilton (Kingston, Jamaica/St. George College (Trinidad State JC)) sent the ball toward goal and slotted perfectly in the upper right corner for an unbelievable goal to make it 2-0.
After that goal, Saint John's could not get much going as the Saints prevailed by a 2-0 margin.
Goalkeeping
Lothian made five saves to earn the shutout, his fourth of his career. Evan Siefkan had one save in the loss.
