CHICAGO (
csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's tennis team was defeated by the Illinois Institute of Technology 5-2 on Friday in the first round of the NCAA Division III Tournament.
Doubles
The No. 1 doubles team of
Elliot Schneider (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) and
Jack Kearney (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS) won their match in a narrow tiebreaker 8-7 (8-6). Unfortunately, the Scarlet Hawks (8-0) won the other two matches to take a 2-1 lead in the dual.
Singles
Illinois Tech won the first singles matches to finish at the No. 3 and 4 spots, but Schneider would get his singles match in and won in straight sets 6-2, 6-2 at the No. 1 spot. Schneider finishes the year 13-0 at the No. 1 singles spot, becoming the first Saint in program history to play at least 10 matches at the No. 1 position and go undefeated during a season.
Illinois Tech advanced to the NCAA second round with a win at the No. 2 spot to end the dual 5-2.
End of Season
The Saints finish with an overall record of 10-5 and this was their second NCAA Division III Tournament appearance.
The team will say goodbye to seniors
Jake Jolowsky (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS),
Jack Kearney (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS) and
Reed Kolles (Otsego, Minn./Rogers HS). The program will now prepare for the transition to the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) next season and Schneider plans to be back for a fifth season.
