Softball Clinches UMAC Regular Season Title

DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) -- On Saturday, the No. 17 St. Scholastica softball team hosted University of Minnesota Morris in a doubleheader at Kenwood Field and swept the Cougars to capture its 21st Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) regular season championship.
 
Game 1: CSS 7, UMM 4
The first game saw the Saints take advantage of errors to pull off the win.
 
The first four innings was a very tight game. In the first inning Grace Hadlich (Mahtomedi, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) hit a sacrifice fly and Nicole Anders (Port Angeles, Wash./Sequim HS) scored an unearned run making the score 1-1. Two innings later, the Saints had another sacrifice fly by Anders and Josie Fourre (Albany, Minn./Albany HS) scored.
 
In the fifth inning, Anders singled through the left side and pushed Toni Bishop (Roseville, Minn./Roseville HS) to score. Soon after, Hadlich singled to the same place and Anders scored an unearned run on an error by the centerfielder. Olivia Howe (Scandia, Minn./Forest Lake HS) hit a triple to left field and scored on another error by the Cougars. Avery Thompson (Austin, Minn./Austin HS) reached first on a dropped fly and Mara Seurer (New Prague, Minn./New Prague HS) scored another unearned run. Going into the sixth inning the score was 7-1.
 
In the seventh, the Cougars made a late run, but were held off and the Saints took the win 7-4.
 
Haley Rosenthal (Mahtomedi, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) pitched six innings and allowed seven hits in the win. Howe came in the seventh to earn the save. Anders and Aislind Dail (Sumner, Wash./Sumner HS) both went 2-for-3 batting with Anders recording a pair of RBIs.
 
Game 2: CSS 6, UMM 0
The Saints shutout the Saints in the second game of the day.
 
The first run was made by the Saints in the third inning when Fourre scored on a wild pitch Soon after, Howe hit a sacrifice fly to send Anders home.
 
The fourth inning saw the Saints score two more runs. Toni Bishop (Roseville, Minn./Roseville HS) hit a single to center field to score Dail. Later that inning, Anders hit another single to center field and Heidi Stewart (Burnsville, Minn./Burnsville HS (Saint Mary's)) scored.
 
Howe doubled to left center when Anders and Fourre both scored unearned runs. The ending score of the game was 6-0.
 
Howe was awarded the win pitching all seven innings, allowing five hits and striking out six batters. Dail and Anders each led the Saints again with three hits apiece.
 
Up Next:
The Saints (32-4, 15-1 UMAC) host Gustavus Adolphus College in a non-conference matchup on Monday at Kenwood Field. The first game is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.
