DULUTH, Minn. (
csssaints.com) – The 17
th-ranked St. Scholastica softball team dropped a pair of non-conference games to Gustavus Adolphus College on Monday at Kenwood Field.
Game 1: Gustavus 5, CSS 4 (F/9)
The first game saw the Saints rally twice before falling in extra-inning 5-4.
Gustavus got the first run of the game in the first inning. The next run was not until the sixth inning when the Gusties (17-17) scored one more taking a 2-0 lead.
In the sixth inning, the Saints tied the game up.
Danielle Erickson (International Falls, Minn./Littlefork-Big Falls HS) scored the first run on a wild pitch. Next,
Aislind Dail (Sumner, Wash./Sumner HS) scored on a
Toni Bishop (Roseville, Minn./Roseville HS) sacrifice fly.
The seventh inning went back and forth. Gustavus scored two runs in the top frame. With the Saints in their final at-bat and down to their final strike, Dail hit a single up the middle to bring in
Madison Crawford (New Prague, Minn./New Prague HS).
Haley Rosenthal (Mahtomedi, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) followed with single to advance
Makenzie Reiter (Big Lake, Minn./Big Lake HS) home tying up the game once again.
Going into extra innings, the eighth inning could not find a winner, but in the ninth inning the Gusties hit a RBI triple to take a 5-4 lead. The Saints then went down in order in the bottom of the ninth as the Gusties prevailed.
Rosenthal picked up the loss for the Saints, just her third of the season. Dail and
Nicole Anders (Port Angeles, Wash./Sequim HS) each had a pair of hits to lead the offense.
Game 2: Gustavus 6, CSS 1
The second game saw the Saints lead for the first four innings, until Gustavus plated runs in each of its final three at-bats to win going away 6-1.
The Saints scored in the first inning on a solo home run by pitcher
Olivia Howe (Scandia, Minn./Forest Lake HS). The Gusties got on the board in the fifth thanks to three straight hits, a triple, a double and then a single, to take a 2-1 lead. A two-out double made it 3-1 in the sixth and then three more runs in the seventh made the final 6-1.
Both Dail and
Josie Fourre (Albany, Minn./Albany HS) recorded doubles.
Howe struck out eight in the loss and was 3-for-3 at the plate.

The Saints (32-6) are looking to fill their regular season schedule with another doubleheader, but if they can't, their next action will be hosting the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Tournament, beginning on Thursday, May 13 at Kenwood Field.
