MANKATO, Minn. (
csssaints.com) – The 17
th-ranked St. Scholastica softball team saw its 18-game win streak come to an end with a doubleheader split at Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) rival Bethany Lutheran College on Friday.
Game 1: CSS 10, BLC 2 (F/5)
The Saints scored in four of the five innings and
Haley Rosenthal (Mahtomedi, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) allowed just three hits as CSS cruised to a 10-2 win to open the day.
Olivia Howe (Scandia, Minn./Forest Lake HS) gave the Saints a 1-0 lead in the top of the first with a RBI single to bring in
Nicole Anders (Port Angeles, Wash./Sequim HS). The Vikings (17-13, 10-2 UMAC) capitalized on a St. Scholastica error in the bottom frame to tie the contest at 1-1 after one inning.
CSS retook the lead in the second inning on an Anders two-out, two-run double.
Grace Hadlich (Mahtomedi, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) followed with a RBI single to make it 4-1.
After Bethany plated a run in the third, Anders had a RBI single to bring in
Josie Fourre (Albany, Minn./Albany HS) to open the scoring in the fourth. Later in the inning, Howe hit a RBI double and Rosenthal a two-run single to extend the lead to 8-2.
Hadlich and Howe added RBI singles in the fifth and the Saints took game one by mercy rule 10-2 in five innings.
Rosenthal improved to 15-2 after allowing only one earned run. Anders was 3-for-4 with three RBIs and four runs scored. Howe was also 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Hadlich had a pair of hits and a pair of RBIs.
Game 2: BLC 3, CSS 1
The Saints saw their win streak and undefeated conference mark come to an end as the Vikings rallied to take the second game 3-1.
CSS took the lead in the second inning with a two-out RBI single by
Toni Bishop (Roseville, Minn./Roseville HS) to bring in
Mara Seurer (New Prague, Minn./New Prague HS).
Howe was cruising along in the pitcher's circle until the fifth inning when a one-out double was followed with a RBI single to tie the game at 1-1.
In the bottom of the sixth, Bethany loaded the bases with one out and was able to get two runs across to take the lead at 3-1. The Saints got the tying run on base in the seventh, but back-to-back strikeouts ended the game in favor of the Vikings.
Howe struck out eight in the defeat, just her second of the season. Hadlich had pair of hits to lead the Saints offense.
