csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's soccer team had its first game at Saints Field in 511 days on Saturday as it opened its spring season with a 3-0 victory over the University of Northwestern (Minn.) in a rematch of the 2019 Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Tournament championship game.
How It Happened
The Saints recorded their first goal of the season two minutes and six seconds into the game when
Elisa Galyen (Duluth, Minn./Two Harbors HS) sent in a cross that floated over the goalkeeper's head and into the net. For Galyen, a sophomore, it was her first collegiate goal.
Morgan Friday (Duluth, Minn./Shattuck St. Mary's HS) had the assist for her 100
th career point, becoming the 10
th player in program history to reach that milestone.
The Eagles (4-4-0, 0-1-0 UMAC) had a great chance in the 14
th minute, but CSS goalkeeper
Taelynn Gittins (Hugo, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) made a nice diving save to keep Northwestern off the board. The Saints made it 2-0 in the 32
nd minute when a Northwestern giveaway off a throw-in let
Emily Thalmann (Plato, Minn./Glencoe-Silver Lake HS) slot one in in the top right corner. For Thalmann, also a sophomore, it was her first collegiate goal.
CSS led 2-0 at halftime, outshooting the Eagles 13-2.
St. Scholastica made it 3-0 in the 59
th minute when Galyen passed it over to a cutting
Kaiya Quam (Oakdale, Minn./Mounds View HS) who flicked it over the goalkeeper and into the net. CSS would hit the post twice in the second half with
Brea Archer (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) striking it in the 66
th minutes and Quam in the 83
rd minute.
Northwestern was awarded a penalty kick in the 76
th minute, but Gittins stopped that chance as well to preserve her first collegiate shutout in her first career game.
Top Performers
Gittins made four saves for the Saints, while Ellie Fryer had eight saves for the Eagles.
Galyen had a goal and an assist for the Saints.
