DULUTH, Minn. (
csssaints.com) – The 19
th-ranked St. Scholastica softball team hosted University of Wisconsin-Superior for a conference doubleheader at Kenwood Field on Wednesday with the Saints coming away with a pair of 6-3 victories.
Game 1: CSS 6, UWS 3
The first matchup didn't start the way the Saints wanted, but they pulled through late and didn't allow any runs in the final six innings.
UWS led 3-1 after one inning.
Aislind Dail (Sumner, Wash./Sumner HS) was up to bat with bases loaded and walked to advance
Grace Hadlich (Mahtomedi, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) to score.
In the second inning, Hadlich singled in
Josie Fourre (Albany, Minn./Albany HS) to make the score 3-2. With the score still 3-2 in the fifth inning
Heidi Stewart (Burnsville, Minn./Burnsville HS (Saint Mary's)) hit a sacrifice fly to center, when Fourre scored again to tie the game at 3-3.
The sixth inning was eventful for the Saints. With one out,
Toni Bishop (Roseville, Minn./Roseville HS) hit a solo home run to take the lead 4-3. Next up to bat Fourre, hits another solo home run to extend the lead. Hadlich scored the last run of the game on
Alex Wurzer's (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley HS) bases loaded walk to make the final 6-3.
Haley Rosenthal (Mahtomedi, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) pitched all seven innings for the Saints and struck out four to record her 12
th win of the season. Hadlich was 3-for-3 at the plate, while Bishop and Fourre each went 2-for-3.
Game 2: CSS 6, UWS 3
The second game of the day saw the same score and outcome for the home team.
The Saints got the first run of the game in the second inning on
Toni Bishop's (Roseville, Minn./Roseville HS) single.
Heidi Stewart (Burnsville, Minn./Burnsville HS (Saint Mary's)) scored. UWS would tie the game up at 1-1 in the third inning.
The Saints pulled ahead in the fourth inning on Bishop's second home run of the day, this time a three-run blast to make the score 4-1.
The sixth inning saw
Danielle Erickson (International Falls, Minn./Littlefork-Big Falls HS) score on
Nicole Anders (Port Angeles, Wash./Sequim HS) single to centerfield. Soon after, Hadlich singled to left center to advance
Sydney Plemel (Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice HS) to score. The Yellowjackets (11-9, 4-4 UMAC) made a short run in the seventh inning to make the final score 6-3.
Olivia Howe (Scandia, Minn./Forest Lake HS) pitched all seven innings and fanned seven for her 13
th win.
Bishop ended the day with two home runs and went 4-for-5 batting.
