ST. PAUL, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica baseball team handed Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) leader the University of Northwestern (Minn.) its first league loss on Saturday after the Eagles took game one 7-5, the Saints took the nightcap 3-0.

Game 1: UNW 7, CSS 5
The opener saw the Saints fall behind 5-0 after four innings, but crawl back to within two runs late before falling 7-5. Northwestern's Keegan Vercoe hit three solo home runs in the contest.

Trailing 5-0 in the fifth, CSS got on the board on a Jake Schelonka (Sartell, Minn./Sartell HS) RBI double to bring in Alex Haapajoki (Brainerd, Minn./Brainerd HS (Central Lakes CC)) and make it 5-1. The differential was five runs again in the seventh inning when Haapajoki scored again on a Zach Harding (Red Wing, Minn./Red Wing HS) single. Schelonka later scored on a Matt Tautges (Fort Ripley, Minn./Pierz HS) fielder's choice to cut the Northwestern lead to 6-3.

After the Eagles tacked on a run in the bottom of the seventh, Haapajoki this time drove in a run with Mitchell Olson (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie HS) coming around to score. Harding then delivered another RBI single to plate Luke Schemenauer (Chippewa Falls, Wis./Chippewa Falls HS) and the margin was now 7-5. Unfortunately, the Saints stranded the bases loaded in the inning.

St. Scholastica brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth, but came up short in a 7-5 setback.

The Saints out-hit the Eagles 12-7 in the contest, including five extra-base hits. Olson had a double and triple, while Schelonka had a pair of doubles.

Game 2: CSS 3, UNW 0
Grant Taival (Stillwater, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) threw 114 pitches over nine innings, allowing seven hits, striking out two and walking just two in the complete-game shutout as the Saints earned the split with a 3-0 victory.

Taival got out of a jam in the bottom of the first, getting a one-out double play with the bases loaded to keep the game scoreless. CSS had a runner thrown out at the plate in the second and both teams stranded runners at third in the third inning.

The Saints finally broke through in the fourth inning when Schemenauer ripped a two out triple to left center, bringing in Harding and Bryce Huffman (Proctor, Minn./Proctor HS) to give CSS a 2-0 lead.

Harding doubled to lead off the seventh and later scored on a wild pitch to extend the lead to 3-0. The Eagles (15-8, 3-1 UMAC) got a runner to second base in the seventh and eighth innings, but Taival and the Saints kept them off the scoreboard, winning 3-0.

Huffman was 3-for-4 in the contest and Harding registered a pair of doubles.
