DULUTH, Minn. (
csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's hockey team got a pair of goals in each period to capture its first Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) regular season title in program history with a 6-0 victory over Marian University (Wis.) Saturday night at Mars Lakeview Arena.
How it Happened
The Saints were in the driver's seat at the beginning of the day to clinch at least a share of the regular season title with a victory, but with Adrian College (Mich.) tying earlier in the day, the Saints knew all they had to do was win to capture the title outright.
After needed goals late to break away from Marian Friday night, the Saints got a pair of goals less than a minute apart in the first period to take an early 2-0 lead.
Taylor Murray (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake HS), who had the game-winner last night, got the first goal with assists from
Taylor Thompson (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo HS) and
Lisa LaRoche (Minnetonka, Minn./Minnetonka HS). The second goal came from
Lauryn Hull (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly HS), who scored for the second straight day. She was assisted by
Courtney Bloemke (Nicollet, Minn./Mankato West HS) and
Allie Bussey (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS).
Murray added another power-play goal at the midway point of the second period.
Kayla Kasel (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake HS) and LaRoche were credited with the assists.
Rachel Anderson (Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View HS) made it 4-0 with 24 seconds left in the period with Kasel gathering another assist.
The distributors were the goal scorers in the third period with Kasel making it 5-0 four minutes into the period and LaRoche putting the final touches on a 6-0 CSS victory.
Goaltending
Lori Huseby (Babbitt, Minn./Northeast Range HS) made 20 saves to improve to 9-0 on the year. Kayla Kolpitcke had 27 saves for the Sabres (2-9-0, 2-6-0 NCHA)
