MANKATO, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica volleyball team took care of Bethany Lutheran College in three sets on Saturday by scores of 25-19, 25-21 and 25-20 in its first action of the 2020-21 academic year.

How it Happened
The Saints got out of the gates in big way, building a 10-1 lead in the opening set. CSS led 16-7 before Bethany battled back and got within four at 22-18. However, the Saints closed out the Vikings to take the opening set 25-19.

The Vikings led 5-4 early in the second set, before St. Scholastica rattled off six straight points. Ashley Larson (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS) had a pair of kills in that stretch. The Saints had a 5-0 run later in the set and when the score got tight again late, a Madissen Burns (Watertown, Minn./Watertown-Mayer HS) kill, followed by a Bethany error gave CSS the set two win 25-21.

The third set mirrored the second set with the Vikings holding an early lead before a CSS 7-0 run gave the Saints the lead for good. A Burns kill followed by a Jessica Remer (Grand Forks, N.D./Sacred Heart HS) kill gave the Saints the set and the match 25-20.

Top Performers
Remer led the Saints with a match-high 13 kills. Burns added nine kills and first-year performer Alana Mayry (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown HS) had six kills in her first collegiate match. Alcia Draper (Williams, Minn./Lake of the Woods HS) had 17 digs and Katie Brostrom (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake HS) had 30 assists.
