Women’s Hockey Scores Final Three Goals to Down Marian

FOND DU LAC, Wis. (csssaints.com) – Taylor Murray (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake HS) broke a 2-2 tie with 12 minutes remaining in the third period and the St. Scholastica women's hockey team added two more goals to defeat Marian University (Wis.) 5-2 Friday evening in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) action.
 
How it Happened
Only one goal was scored in the first period, which came off the stick of Kayla Kasel (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake HS) with 54 seconds left to make it 1-0 at the first intermission. Rachel Anderson (Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View HS) and Lisa LaRoche (Minnetonka, Minn./Minnetonka HS) had the assists. CSS had an 11-2 advantage in shots in the period.
 
The Sabres (2-8-0, 2-5-0 NCHA) knotted the contest at 1-1 with six minutes remaining in the second period, but the Saints responded three minutes later with Lauryn Hull's (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly HS) first goal of the season as St. Scholastica led by a 2-1 margin at the second intermission. Sara Parent (Otsego, Minn./Rogers HS) and Courtney Bloemke (Nicollet, Minn./Mankato West HS) had the assists.
 
Marian tied the game again, less than two minutes into the third period, with a power-play goal. Later in the period, with both teams down a skater, Murray found the net to give CSS a 3-2 lead. Mariah Haedrich (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown HS) had the assist.
 
Anderson gave the Saints insurance with a goal at 5:30 remaining. Taylor Thompson (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo HS) was credited with the assist. St. Scholastica added an empty-netter in the final seconds with Kasel scoring her second of the game to make the final 5-2.
 
Goaltending
Lori Huseby (Babbitt, Minn./Northeast Range HS) made 21 saves to improve to 8-0 on the year. Lindsay Lewison had 26 saves for the Sabres.
 
Up Next
Both teams close out the regular season tomorrow night (Saturday) at Mars Lakeview Arena. The Saints (10-0-0, 7-0-0 NCHA) will look to close out a perfect regular season and hope to clinch the No. 1 overall seed for the Slaats Cup Playoffs. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m.
