PEORIA, Ill. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica softball team had to settle for a day two split at the Mount Mary University (Wis.) Collegiate Slugger Series, first taking care of host Mount Mary 18-9, but suffering its second defeat of the season in a 7-3 setback to the University of Dubuque (Iowa) in game two.

CSS 18, Mount Mary 9
The first game of the day saw a combined 27 runs and 32 hits as the Saints outslugged the Blue Angels for the 18-9 victory.

Olivia Howe (Scandia, Minn./Forest Lake HS) got the scoring started with a two-run home run in the top of the first. Josie Fourre (Albany, Minn./Albany HS) also had a RBI double in the inning to give the Saints an early three-run edge. After the Blue Angels (1-5) responded with three runs in the bottom frame, CSS went on to score eight unanswered runs over the next three innings to open up an 11-3 lead.

Mount Mary cut the margin to 12-8 after five innings, but the Saints added six more runs in the sixth and seventh innings to hold off the Blue Angels and win 18-9.

The Saints pounded out 20 hits, the most in a game since recording 22 hits vs. Northland College on April 24, 2018. Howe, Fourre, Kari Breuer (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake HS), Nicole Anders (Port Angeles, Wash./Sequim HS) and Haley Rosenthal (Mahtomedi, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) all recorded three hits. Howe had four RBIs, while Anders drove in three runs. Rosenthal and Sydney Plemel (Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice HS) each scored three times.

Rosenthal also got the win in the pitcher's circle, striking out 10.

Dubuque 7, CSS 3
It was a different story for the CSS offense in the second game of the morning as the Saints were held to just three hits in a 7-3 setback to Dubuque.

The Spartans (2-1) scored three runs in the first inning and added another in the second to jump out to a 4-0 lead. St. Scholastica was held hitless until Howe led off the fourth with a double. She later scored on a Heidi Stewart (Burnsville, Minn./Burnsville HS (Saint Mary's)) sacrifice fly.

Toni Bishop (Roseville, Minn./Roseville HS) led off the fifth inning with a home run, her second in as many days and Aislind Dail (Sumner, Wash./Sumner HS) led off the seventh inning with her first collegiate home run to make the final 7-3.

All three CSS hits were extra base hits, two home runs and a double. Howe struck out six, but picked up her first loss of the season.

Up Next
The Saints (10-2) have a nine day break before returning to the field and hopefully playing their first outdoor games of the season against Saint Mary's University on Sunday, March 14 at the University of Northwestern (Minn.).
