ST. PAUL (
csssaints.com) – In its first outdoor games of 2021, the St. Scholastica softball team swept Saint Mary's University on Sunday in a doubleheader played at the University of Northwestern (Minn.). The Saints won a wild first game 14-12 and then took care of business in game two, winning 6-1.
CSS 14, SMU 12
In a back-and-forth affair to start the day, the Saints pushed three runs across in bottom of the sixth to win 14-12.
After the Cardinals (1-5) plated a run in the top of the first, CSS took advantage of a SMU error in the bottom frame plating three unearned runs. Two of the three runs came off the bat of
Aislind Dail (Sumner, Wash./Sumner HS) with a home run to left center. Saint Mary's scored four runs in the top of the second to regain the lead at 5-3.
St. Scholastica got those four runs back in the bottom of the third. Two runs came on a
Mara Seurer (New Prague, Minn./New Prague HS) two-run double and then Dail hit another two-run home run as the score stood at 7-5.
Olivia Howe (Scandia, Minn./Forest Lake HS) and
Josie Fourre (Albany, Minn./Albany HS) had a RBI singles in the fourth to extend the lead to 10-5.
However, Saint Mary's battled back with three doubles in the fifth inning and also took advantage of a CSS error to come back and tie the game at 10-10.
Toni Bishop (Roseville, Minn./Roseville HS) gave the Saints the lead back in bottom frame with a solo home run.
The Cardinals took advantage of another St. Scholastica error in the sixth and pushed two runs across to take the lead at 12-11. In the bottom of the sixth, Howe and Seurer hit back-to-back one out doubles to tie the game at 12-12. Then a critical two-out error by SMU allowed Seurer to score to give the Saints a 13-12 lead. Bishop followed with a RBI double to make it 14-12.
In the seventh, Saint Mary's got the leadoff batter on base, but Howe held the Cardinals off the scoreboard to give CSS the 14-12 victory.
Howe allowed just one earned run in 5.2 innings of relief to earn the victory. She was also 3-for-4 at the plate with a pair of doubles and two RBIs. Seurer and Dail each had four RBIs.
Nicole Anders (Port Angeles, Wash./Sequim HS) scored three times.
CSS 6, SMU 1
There were not as many fireworks in the second game as the Saints never trailed and added three runs late to win going away 6-1.
Howe had a RBI single and Fourre was hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded to give the Saints a 2-0 lead after a half inning. The Cardinals plated a run in the second inning, but CSS got that run back in the fourth on a
Kari Breuer (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) RBI single to make it 3-1.
Anders led off the seventh with a hit and later scored on a SMU error. Dail added a RBI double and Bishop an RBI single to make it 6-1. Saint Mary's got the first two batters on base in the bottom of the seventh, but a double play ended the threat as the Saints completed the sweep by a 6-1 final.
Haley Rosenthal (Mahtomedi, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) allowed only one earned run and scattered seven hits for the complete-game win. Anders, Howe and Dail all had a pair of hits.
