VIRGINIA, Minn. (
csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's tennis team defeated Martin Luther College 8-1 on Saturday at the Virginia Indoor Tennis and Pickleball Club to earn its first victory of the 2021 season.
Doubles
The No. 1 team of
Julia Maier (Hamburg, Germany/Heidberg Gymnasium) and
Madilyn Jankila (Eveleth, Minn./Eveleth-Gilbert HS) prevailed by an 8-1 margin. That was the same outcome for the No. 2 duo of
Ava Warren (Virginia, Minn./Virginia HS) and
Emily Carpenter (Pine City, Minn./Pine City HS). CSS won by default at the No. 3 spot.
Singles
Maier topped her opponent at the No. 1 spot by scores of 6-1, 6-3. Jankila shut out her opponent at the No. 2 spot 6-0, 6-0 for her first victory of the season.
At the No. 4 spot,
Maria Valentini (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS) dropped only one game in a 6-1, 6-0 victory, for her first win of the year.
Madeline Samz (Savage, Minn. /Burnsville HS) was the last winner on the day, winning 6-4, 6-1 at the No. 5 position. For Samz, that was her first collegiate singles victory.
