DULUTH, Minn. (
csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica volleyball team dropped its first set of the season to open Thursday night's match at the Reif Gymnasium against Bridge Rival University of Wisconsin-Superior, but rallied to take the next three sets to defeat the Yellowjackets in four sets.
How it Happened
The Yellowjackets (5-1, 3-1 UMAC) led for much of the first set with a hitting percentage of .282 compared the Saints' .095. UWS scored six of the final seven points of the set to win 25-17.
St. Scholastica trailed 9-5 in the second set, but proceeded to go on an 18-2 run, including nine straight points off the service of
Alcia Draper (Williams, Minn./Lake of the Woods HS). The Saints cruised to a 25-15 second set win to even the match.
Ashley Larson (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS) had four kills in the set.
Superior then led 11-6 in the third set until the Saints went on a 9-0 run off the service of
Katie Brostrom (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake HS). With the score at 22-19, CSS recorded the final three points of the set with a kill
Haley Rohwer (Norwood Young America, Minn./Mayer Lutheran HS) and back-to-back kills by
Jessica Remer (Grand Forks, N.D./Sacred Heart HS) to give the Saints the 25-19 set win. Remer recorded eight kills in the third set alone.
St. Scholastica scored the first five points of the fourth set, but Superior later used an 8-0 run to take a 15-10 lead. Three Remer kills was part of a 5-0 CSS run to give the Saints the lead back at 18-17. The Saints went on to capture the set and the match 25-20.
Top Performers
Remer led the Saints with a season-high 16 kills, while also adding a season-high 23 digs. Larson contributed a career-high 13 kills. Brostrom had 39 assists and 18 digs, while Draper recorded a match-high 28 digs. Rohwer added a career-high seven blocks.
