NEW ULM, Minn. (
csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's basketball team led at the half at Martin Luther College on Saturday, but came up short by a final of 70-66 in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) action.
How It Happened
Liz Frase (Proctor, Minn./Proctor HS (Concordia-Moorhead)) scored the first five points for the Saints and CSS led by three points early, but the Knights (2-8, 1-4 UMAC) outscored the Saints 12-5 in the final six minutes of the first quarter and led 16-12 heading into the second period.
Trailing by seven in the second quarter, the Saints went on an 8-0 run with
Lizzie Altendorf (Braham, Minn./Braham HS) scoring six of those points to give St. Scholastica the lead at 22-21. A
Kaylee Kennedy (Littlefork, Minn./Littlefork-Big Falls HS) jumper in the waning moments of the first half gave St. Scholastica a 30-26 halftime edge.
A Frase jumper gave the Saints a six-point lead early in the second half, but Martin Luther responded with a 11-3 run to regain the lead at 37-35. A
Morgan Anderson (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake HS (UW-Superior)) layup gave the Saints a five-point lead with two minutes remaining in the third quarter, but the Knights scored the final seven points of the quarter to take a 48-46 lead into the fourth.
St. Scholastica trailed by five at the midway point of the fourth quarter until the Knights scored seven of the next eight points for its largest lead of the game of 11 points with three minutes remaining. However, the Saints came roaring back and a
Macy Hermanson (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) 3-pointer cut the lead to 66-64 with over a minute remaining. Unfortunately, the Knights made free throws late to prevail 70-66.
Top Performers
Kennedy scored 12 points as did first-year player
Ashley Faur (Pine City, Minn./Pine City HS) for a season-high. Faur also recorded seven rebounds and three steals. Frase and Anderson finished with 10 points apiece.
Erika Gosch led all scorers for the Knights with 23 points.
