UWS Holds off Women’s Basketball Late

SUPERIOR, Wis. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's basketball team trailed by only two heading into the fourth quarter Thursday night, but was held to six points in the final period in a 57-48 defeat to Bridge Rival University of Wisconsin-Superior.
 
How It Happened
The Saints finished the first quarter with five straight Lizzie Altendorf (Braham, Minn./Braham HS) points and trailed 11-10 after 10 minutes of action. The Yellowjackets (3-3, 2-3 UMAC) scored nine of the first 11 points of the second quarter and led by as much as 11 with less than a minute to go in the first half, but the Saints scored the final four points of the half and trailed 33-26 at halftime.
 
CSS got off to a great start in the second half with 3-pointers from Altendorf and Eve Turner (Side Lake, Minn./Hibbing HS) to cut the UWS lead to one. However, the Yellowjackets extended their lead back to seven until St. Scholastica for a third time closed a period scoring the final five points and trailed 44-42 heading into the fourth.
 
The teams traded baskets in the first four minutes for the quarter and CSS trailed by just three with four minutes to go, until Superior went on an 8-0 run to pull away and win by a final of 57-48.
 
Top Performers
Altendorf finished with a career-high 15 points, 11 of which coming in the first half. Altendorf also recorded five steals. Former yellowjacket Morgan Anderson (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake HS (UW-Superior)) added 12 points and seven rebounds. Liz Frase (Proctor, Minn./Proctor HS (Concordia-Moorhead)) grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.
 
Kaelyn Christian had 15 points to lead the Yellowjackets.

The Saints (0-4, 0-3 UMAC) will head to Martin Luther College on Saturday for another Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) matchup. Action is slated to begin at 3 p.m.
