NORTHFIELD, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica softball team opened its 2021 season on Thursday with a doubleheader sweep of Crown College at the Dundas Dome.

Game 1: CSS 5, Crown 1
The season opener saw the Saints push a pair runs across in both the fourth and fifth innings to win 5-1.

Josie Fourre (Albany, Minn./Albany HS) tripled to lead off the second inning and then scored on a Mara Seurer (New Prague, Minn./New Prague HS) fielder's choice to give the Saints an early 1-0 advantage. It remained 1-0 into the fourth inning, when a Crown error led off the inning and Fourre was able to drive in Danielle Erickson (International Falls, Minn./Littlefork-Big Falls HS) to extend the lead to 2-0. Two batters later, first-year Aislind Dail (Sumner, Wash./Sumner HS) ripped a double to bring in Fourre and extend the lead to 3-0.

Another first-year performer, Mady Peterson (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake HS), had a RBI single in the fifth to plate Kari Breuer (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) and Peterson later scored on a two-out single by Seurer to give the Saints a 5-0 lead. The Storm were able to push a run across in the top of the seventh to avoid the shutout as 5-1 was the final margin.

Sophomore Haley Rosenthal (Mahtomedi, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) recorded the complete-game win, striking out two and scattering four hits. Breuer led the offense from the leadoff spot, going 3-for-4 with a run scored. Fourre was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a RBI. Seurer drove in a pair of runs.

Game 2: CSS 8, Crown 0 (F/5)
The second game of the day saw St. Scholastica score six runs in the first inning and win the game by mercy rule in five innings 8-0.

After getting out of a bases loaded jam in the top of the first, the Saints had their first six batters reach base. Olivia Howe (Scandia, Minn./Forest Lake HS) doubled in Breuer and Peterson to open the scoring. Later in the inning, Seurer had a RBI single plating Toni Bishop (Roseville, Minn./Roseville HS). Following a sacrifice fly by Dail, Heidi Stewart (Burnsville, Minn./Burnsville HS (Saint Mary's)) registered a RBI double. A Sydney Plemel (Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice HS) RBI single closed the scoring for the Saints in the inning. Four of the six runs were unearned.

CSS added two more runs in the third on RBI singles by Plemel and Breuer to extend the lead to 8-0. Crown threatened to extend the game in the fifth, but stranded a runner at third to end the game early 8-0.

Howe struck out four and allowed only two hits to earn the win. Howe and Plemel also had a pair of hits and two RBIs.
