DULUTH, Minn. (
csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's basketball team forced 24 turnovers, including 15 steals, but it wasn't enough in a 75-59 setback to the University of Minnesota Morris on Saturday at the Reif Gymnasium.
How It Happened
The Cougars (2-2) jumped out to a 9-2 advantage and led 18-11 after the first quarter. Morris then scored the first nine points of the second period to extend its lead to 27-11. However, the Saints responded with a 7-0 run sparked by a
Kaylee Kennedy (Littlefork, Minn./Littlefork-Big Falls HS) 3-point-play. CSS cut the deficit down to 30-25 with over two minutes to go, but wound up trailing 36-27 after the half.
Kennedy and
Eve Turner (Side Lake, Minn./Hibbing HS) each scored nine points in the first half for CSS. The Cougars shot 56% from the floor in the first half, while the Saints were held to 30%.
The Morris lead did not grow much in the third quarter until they were able to get to the foul line late in the period and scored 12 of the final 16 points to lead 57-41 heading into the fourth.
The margin did not change in the fourth quarter with each team scoring 18 points as the Saints fell 75-59. Kennedy had eight points for CSS in the period.
Top Performers
Kennedy finished with 21 points in 29 minutes of action to pace the Saints. Turner added a career-high 17 points, while
Amelia Zmuda (Saint Anthony, Minn./Saint Anthony Village HS) chipped in nine points.
Ashley Faur (Pine City, Minn./Pine City HS) grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.
Lexus Eagle Chasing had a game-high 25 points for the Cougars.
