DULUTH, Minn. (
csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's basketball team was in front for over 30 minutes, but was outscored 23-13 in the fourth quarter as Saint Mary's University rallied past the Saints for a 65-57 Saturday afternoon at the Reif Gymnasium.
How It Happened
The Cardinals (3-4, 2-2 MIAC) led 7-6 early until
Eve Turner (Side Lake, Minn./Hibbing HS) drained a 3-pointer to put CSS back in front. That spurred a 10-1 run which was capped on a
Karli Nixon (Deerwood, Minn./Crosby-Ironton HS) 3-pointer to give CSS a 16-8 lead. The Saints led at the end of the first quarter 16-10. CSS held Saint Mary's to 3-of-20 shooting in the period.
The Saints maintained their lead for much of the second quarter until the Cardinals tied it at 28-28 with 1:21 to go in the half. However, St. Scholastica scored the final four points of the half on a
Megan Hurley (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury HS) layup and an
Emma Schmidt (Alexandria, Minn./Alexandria HS) put back at the buzzer to make the halftime score 32-28 CSS.
A Nixon layup put the Saints up five with 3:27 to go in the third quarter, but Saint Mary's responded with five straight points to tie the game. However, a
Miranda Broberg (Milaca, Minn./Milaca HS (UW-Superior)) jumper in the final minute kept the Saints in front, 44-42 after three quarters. Six different Saints had 2 points in the period.
A Saint Mary's 3-pointer with six minutes to go in the fourth quarter gave the Cardinals their first lead since the opening three minutes of the game. CSS would be held without a field goal for nearly seven minutes in the quarter as Saint Mary's went on a 15-3 run to take a 63-53 lead. CSS got back within six in the final minute, but fell by a final of 65-57.

The Saints had scoring balance with six players scoring at least seven points and Broberg leading the way with 10 points. Schmidt grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.
