ST. PAUL (
csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's hockey team held a 6-2 lead with nine minutes to go in the second period and held on for a 6-5 win to complete the weekend sweep of Hamline University Saturday night at Mars Lakeview Arena.
How it Happened
After the Pipers (2-6-0, 0-2-0 MIAC) scored six minutes into the game,
Filimon Ledenkov (Polotsk, Belarus/Ostroshitsko-Gorodokskaya (New York Aviators-USPHL)) tied it at 1-1 midway through the period with assists from
Arkhip Ledenkov (Polotsk, Belarus/Ostroshitsko-Gorodokskaya (New York Aviators-USPHL)) and
Jacob Seitz (Mountain Iron, Minn./Virginia HS (Minnesota Magicians-NAHL)). Hamline regained the lead with a power-play play goal with 3:31 remaining in the period.
However, that lead did not last long as
Nathan Adrian (Roseau, Minn./Roseau HS (Minnesota Wilderness-NAHL)) scored his third goal of the series 29 seconds later to tie it at 2-2.
Brodie Girod (Clavet, Saskatchewan/Clavet HS (Nipawin-SJHL)) had the assist. CSS then took its first lead a minute later on a
Danylo Sukhonos (Kharkiv, Ukraine/Brovary Professional Lyceum (New York Aviators-USPHL)) power-play goal to make it 3-2 at the first intermission. For Sukhonos, it was his first collegiate goal.
Brent Jones (Hartland, Mich./Detroit Catholic Central HS (Trine)) scored a short-handed goal 10 seconds into the second period to extend the St. Scholastica lead to 4-2.
Michael Talbot (Anoka, Minn./Anoka HS (Minot-NAHL)) made it 5-2 five minutes into the period with assists from Jones and
Sam Fuss (Edina, Minn./Edina HS (Minot-NAHL)).
Bryce Johnson (Roseau, Minn./Roseau HS (Thief River Falls-SIJHL)) scored to widen the margin to 6-2 with 9:03 left in the second period.
Riley Bechard (Sedley, Saskatchewan/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame (Woodstock-MJAHL)) and
Braeden Holcomb (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids HS) had the assists. The Pipers cut the deficit to 6-3 with four minutes left in the second period and that is where the score stood at the second intermission.
Hamline scored a minute into the third period and then made it really interesting with another goal with 11 minutes remaining. However, the Saints defense limited the Pipers to just four shots on goal the rest of the way to hang on for the 6-5 victory.
Goaltending
Jack Bostedt (Janesville, Wis./Janesville Craig HS (Minnesota Mullets-USPHL)) made 18 saves for his sixth win of the season. Kevin Lake had 25 saves for the Pipers.
