DUBUQUE, Iowa (
csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's basketball team returned to the court for the first time since December 11th on Wednesday where it could not overcome a first half deficit in a 78-68 loss to Lawrence University (Wis.) at the Loras College (Iowa) Holiday Classic.
How It Happened
Isiah Hendrickson (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) got the Saints started with a 3-pointer to open the game. CSS led for much of the opening five minutes of the contest. With 13 minutes left in the first half, the Vikings (6-6) went on a 7-0 run to take a 20-12 lead. The margin climbed to double-digits with seven minutes left in the first half where it stayed as Lawrence led 44-31 at the break.
CSS shot 41% from the floor in the opening 20 minutes, while the Vikings shot 55%. Lawrence outscored the Saints 11-3 in points off turnovers.
After the Vikings made the first field goal of the second half to extend the lead to 15, the Saints got five straight points from
Nick Carlson (Canyon, Minn./South Ridge HS) and then a fastbreak bucket from
Quinn Fischer (Esko, Minn./Esko HS) to cut the deficit to 46-38. However, Lawrence extended the lead back to 16 with 11 minutes remaining.
Trailing by 15 with eight minutes left, CSS began to chip away and a
Jack Silgen (Deerwood, Minn./Crosby-Ironton HS (St. Thomas)) layup with five minutes left made it 65-59. Fischer then cut the Lawrence lead to five with 2:30 left, but the Saints made only one more field goal the rest of the way as the Vikings made free throws to win 78-68.
