ST. PAUL (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's basketball team could not recover from a slow start in its first Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) road game of the season Tuesday night, falling to St. Catherine University 75-52.
 
How It Happened
The Saints were outscored 28-8 in the first quarter, but once again scored the first points of the contest on a Miranda Broberg (Milaca, Minn./Milaca HS (UW-Superior)) steal and layup. CSS has scored the first basket in each of its first four games. The Wildcats (3-3, 2-1 MIAC) responded with 10 straight points and never looked back. St. Kate's had a 13-0 run later in the quarter to open the 20-point margin.
 
St. Scholastica responded in the second quarter by outscoring the Wildcats 18-17. Broberg and Emma Schmidt (Alexandria, Minn./Alexandria HS) combined for 13 of the 18 points as the Saints trailed 45-26 at the half. CSS was outscored 20-2 in the paint in the second quarter.
 
The Saints also outscored St. Catherine in the fourth quarter 13-11 with Broberg leading the way with six points in the period.
 
Top Performers
Broberg finished with a game-high and career-high 19 points. Schmidt added nine points and seven rebounds. Liz Frase (Proctor, Minn./Proctor HS (Concordia-Moorhead)) grabbed a team-high eight rebounds. Amelia Zmuda (Saint Anthony, Minn./Saint Anthony Village HS) had a career-high five assists.
 
Bree Glynn and Sam Orth each had 13 points to lead St. Kate's

The Saints (0-4, 0-2 MIAC) will be in action again next Wednesday when they return to The Reif to face Augsburg University in another MIAC matchup. Tip time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
