DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's basketball team was defeated 61-49 against the College of Saint Benedict on Saturday at the Reif Gymnasium in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) opener for both teams.

How It Happened
Megan Hurley (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury HS) started the game off by scoring first with a layup to give the Saints the early lead. Unfortunately, the Bennies () came back with the next eight points to take the lead. Hurley made up five out of the eight points in this first quarter for CSS. In the last seconds of the quarter Miranda Broberg (Milaca, Minn./Milaca HS (UW-Superior)) made a 3-pointer to bring the score at the end of the first 12-8 St. Ben's.

The second quarter started again with CSS scoring first with a 3-pointer by Broberg. The Saints would re-take the lead, but then it was back and forth. St. Scholastica's Karli Nixon (Deerwood, Minn./Crosby-Ironton HS) had a fast break in the paint for a layup to tie the game at 19-19. Unfortunately for CSS this was their last points for the half, while the Bennies put up seven more to go into the half 26-19.

The third quarter started with St. Ben's scoring again to take a nine point lead over the Saints. CSS chipped away getting some points back, not enough to break even or take the lead but narrowing the margin down. By the end of the third quarter, Nixon was able to sink a 3-pointer to bring the score 46-42, with the Saints only being down four.

CSS was able to start off this quarter scoring first again to cut the margin to two. It seemed though after that point the Saints ran out of steam as being down by two was the closest they would get to St. Ben's. CSS went seven minutes without a field goal. Hurley made four out of the last five points for the Saints. St. Ben's ended up pulling off the win against CSS 61-49.

Top Performers
Hurley led the Saints again with a career-high 16 points. Broberg contributed with 15 points, and Nixon finished with 11 points. Eve Turner (Side Lake, Minn./Hibbing HS) led the Saints in rebounds with nine on the day.

The Bennies' Tori Szathmary led her team with 16 points, Lydia Hay and Carla Meyer both contributed 13.
