ST. BONIFACIUS, Minn. (
csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's basketball team could not hold on to its halftime lead as former conference member Crown College shot 61% from the floor in the third quarter and held off the Saints in the fourth to win 86-76 Wednesday night.
How It Happened
A
Karli Nixon (Deerwood, Minn./Crosby-Ironton HS) 3-pointer gave the Saints an early 10-5 advantage. CSS led at the end of the first quarter by a score of 23-19. Nixon had 10 points in the period for the Saints.
The Storm (1-0) took a two-point lead midway through the second quarter when the Saints went on a 7-0 run with four points coming from
Miranda Broberg (Milaca, Minn./Milaca HS (UW-Superior)). CSS led by as much as six before going into halftime with a 43-42 lead.
Nixon had 17 points in the first half in her St. Scholastica debut.
Layups by
Megan Hurley (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury HS) and
Amelia Zmuda (Saint Anthony, Minn./Saint Anthony Village HS) to begin the second half gave the Saints a 47-42 advantage. However, CSS would make just two more field goals the rest of the quarter as the Storm went 11-for-17 from the floor and took a 70-58 lead into the fourth period.
Nixon tried to get the Saints back in it with a pair of layups to open the final quarter.
Eve Turner (Side Lake, Minn./Hibbing HS) got the deficit down to seven in the final two minutes, but CSS did not get any closer in an 86-76 loss to the Storm.
Top Performers
Nixon finished with 21 points in 25 minutes of action in her collegiate debut. Hurley added a career-high 16 points and nine rebounds. Zmuda and Broberg added 12 points each. For Broberg that was also a career-high.
Dominique Urbina scored 45 points for the Storm, while McKenzie Latzke added 20 points.
