Young Saints Unable to Slow Down Fifth-Ranked Johnnies

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. (csssaints.com) – No. 5 Saint John's University scored touchdowns on its first six offensive possessions en route to an 81-0 victory over the St. Scholastica football team on Saturday at Clemens Stadium.
 
How it Happened
The Johnnies (8-0, 6-0 MIAC) didn't have a scoring drive of over four minutes in the first half and also had a scoop-and-score as the score stood at 54-0 at the half. Saint John's had a pick-six early in the second half and added three more offensive scores in the second half.
 
The Saints offense got inside the Johnnie red zone once in the first half and again in the second half, but in both instances turned the ball over on downs.
 
Top Performers for the Saints
First-year quarterback Byron Bishop (Sublimity, Ore./Regis HS) threw for 133 yards and found junior Wyatt Lahr (Bowlus, Minn./Royalton HS), who had five receptions for a career-high 46 yards. First-year wide out Ty Givance (Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park HS) had a season-high four receptions for a season-high 47 yards. First-year running back Nick Schlender (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS) ran for 55 yards, while another first-year back Sean Diedrich (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata HS) averaged 6.5 yards per carry on six attempts.
 
First-year defensive back Treygan Adams (St. Paul, Minn./Roseville HS) led the defense with 10 tackles. First defensive lineman Donovon Benson (Houston, Texas/Willamette HS) forced a fumble.
 
Top Performers for the Opponents
In his first collegiate start, Chris Backes threw for 155 yards and four touchdowns. 12 different Johnnies ran for 371 yards. Ravi Alston had five receptions for 71 yards and a score.

The Saints (0-6, 0-6 MIAC) will have their home finale on Saturday when they host Macalester College at Public Schools Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
