Volleyball Stumbles against St. Kate’s

DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – St. Catherine University had a hitting percentage of .324 as it defeated the St. Scholastica volleyball team in three sets on Friday night at the Reif Gymnasium.
 
How it Happened
Ashley Larson (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS) had a pair of kills early to put the Saints up in the opening set, but the Wildcats (11-12, 4-5 MIAC) scored four straight points to take the lead for the first time and would not relinquish it. St. Kate's scored the final seven points of the set to win 25-12. Alana Mayry (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown HS) had four kills in the set to lead the Saints.
 
St. Scholastica used blocking to take a 7-4 lead in the second set. The Saints led 19-13 following Caitlin Schneeweis (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS (Mary)) service ace, but the Wildcats responded with six consecutive point to tie the set at 19-19. CSS then led 22-21 before St. Kate's recorded the next three points. The Saints then fended off one set point, but could not fight off a second as the Wildcats took the second set 25-23. Haley Rohwer (Norwood Young America, Minn./Mayer Lutheran HS) led the Saints with four kills in the set.
 
St. Kate's went on a 7-1 run in the third set and never trailed to take the set and the match 25-20.
 
Top Performers
Mayry led the Saints with nine kills. Madissen Burns (Watertown, Minn./Watertown-Mayer HS) and Larson each added eight kills. Katie Brostrom (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake HS) had 17 assists and Alcia Draper (Williams, Minn./Lake of the Woods HS) 15 digs.

The Saints (3-10, 2-6 MIAC) will be part of a triangular tomorrow (Saturday) when they face Carleton College in MIAC action at 1 p.m. and then the University of Wisconsin-Platteville in non-conference play at 3 p.m. All of the action takes place in Northfield.
