ST. JOSEPH, Minn. (
csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica volleyball team had its best hitting percentage of the season as it earned its first Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) victory in four sets over the College of Saint Benedict Saturday night.
How it Happened
With the first set knotted up at 6-6, the Saints scored four straight points off the serve of
Alana Mayry (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown HS) to take a 10-6 lead. However, the Bennies (2-10, 0-3 MIAC) came back to take a 15-14 lead. CSS responded by scoring eight of the next 10 points to regain the lead at 22-17. St. Ben's would get within two points late, but
Jessica Remer (Grand Forks, N.D./Sacred Heart HS) finished off the set with a kill to give the Saints the first set 25-21. Remer had six kills in the opening set, followed by
Delaney Schaeffer (Brainerd, Minn./Brainerd HS) with four kills.
The second set was back-and-forth early before a 5-0 run by the Saints made it 15-11. CSS later went on another 5-0 run to take control of the second set and a
Haley Rohwer (Norwood Young America, Minn./Mayer Lutheran HS) kill gave the Saints a two-sets to none lead with 25-20 set two victory.
Madissen Burns (Watertown, Minn./Watertown-Mayer HS) led the Saints with four kills in the set.
The Bennies would not be swept on their home court as they did not trail in the third set to extend the match with a 25-17 win.
St. Ben's held a 9-4 lead in the fourth set, before the Saints started to chip away. Trailing by four, CSS went on an 8-2 run to take a 15-13 lead in the set. From there on out every time the Bennies got close, the Saints scored three consecutive points as they went on to take the fourth set and the match 25-20. Burns and Rohwer led the Saints with four kills apiece in the set.
Top Performers
Remer led the Saints with 15 kills. Burns followed with a season-high 12 kills.
Ellie Greenwaldt (Raymond, Minn./Central Minnesota Christian School) had a season-high 22 assists and
Katie Brostrom (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake HS) followed with 21 assists.
Alcia Draper (Williams, Minn./Lake of the Woods HS) had a season-high 40 digs.
