csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica softball team opened action at The Spring Games on Sunday with a pair of losses to D'Youville College (N.Y.) and Dominican University (Ill.).
D'Youville 10, CSS 3
The Spartans (3-0) scored eight runs over the final three innings to defeat the Saints 10-3 on Sunday morning.
D'Youville scored on a double steal in the first and on a two-out double in the third to lead 2-0. CSS had runners in scoring position in the first and second innings, but finally broke through in the third when
Autumn Siers (Superior, Wis./Superior HS) stole third base and then came into score on an errant throw. Later in the inning
Nicole Anders (Port Angeles, Wash./Sequim HS) scored on a double steal to tie the game at 2-2.
The Spartans led off the fifth inning with a pair of hits. The Saints then committed back-to-back errors. When the dust settled in the inning, D'Youville led 6-2. A pair of two-RBI singles in the seventh inning extended the Spartan lead to 10-2.
Toni Bishop (Roseville, Minn./Roseville HS) led off the bottom of the seventh with a home run to make the final 10-3.
Anders and
Kayla Christopherson (Zimmerman, Minn./Zimmerman HS (Itasca CC)) each had a pair of hits to lead the St. Scholastica offense.
Dominican 5, CSS 1
The Saints met the Stars for the second time in the last week, with Dominican picking up the 6-2 win in Rochester last Sunday. It would be a four-run differential again this afternoon with the Stars earning the 5-1 victory.
St. Scholastica stranded the bases loaded in the top of the first. The Stars (3-5) got on the board in the second inning with a two-run single to make it 2-0. The Saints had a chance to respond in the third inning, but would have a runner thrown out at the plate.
Dominican extended its lead in the sixth inning, scoring off of a CSS error. Later in the inning, a two-out double allowed two more unearned runs to score to make it 5-0.
The Saints plated a run in the top of the seventh when Anders brought in
Kari Breuer (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) with a RBI single to make the final 5-1.
Haley Rosenthal (Mahtomedi, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) allowed only two earned runs for her first loss of the season.
Olivia Howe (Scandia, Minn./Forest Lake HS) was 2-for-4 to lead the St. Scholastica offense.
