Postseason Implications for Men’s Hockey vs. Finlandia

DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's hockey team will have its final two Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) games of the season when it battles Finlandia University (Mich.) in a home-and-home series for the final North Division postseason spot.

What You Need to Know about the Saints:
-CSS will enter the series with a one-point advantage over Finlandia.
-A series sweep would clinch the postseason spot for the Saints.
-St. Norbert College (Wis.), Marian University (Wis.) and Lawrence University (Wis.) have all clinched North Division postseason berths.
-CSS can still finish third in the Division with a sweep this week and Lawrence loses its final four games against Marian and St. Norbert.
-Junior captain Nate Pionk (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown HS (Minot-NAHL)) leads the team with 15 points and 10 assists.
-Fellow junior Carson Rose (Surrey, British Columbia/Elgin Park Secondary (Weyburn-SJHL)) has a team-high nine goals.
-Freshman Tyler Hinterser (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville HS (Brookings-NAHL)) is third on the team with nine points.
-Sophomore Jon Hansen (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Marshall (Minnesota Mullets-USPHL)) has three assists in the last five games.
-Senior goaltender Zane Steeves (Red Deer, Alberta/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame (100 Mile Wranglers-KIJHL)), who has been out of action for a month, is expected to be back in action this week.
-Steeves still ranks fifth in the conference with a .919 save percentage.
-Steeves has all five of St. Scholastica's wins in goal.
 
What You Need to Know about Finlandia:
Record: 4-15-2, 2-12-2 NCHA
-The Lions have four conference games remaining.
-A three-point series for the Lions would give them the final postseason spot.
-Finlandia closes the regular season at home against Marian University on February 14-15.
-The Lions have gone to overtime seven times this season and are 1-4-2 in those games.
-They have just one win since January 1 and that was in overtime against Trine University (Ind.).
-Finlandia is 1-11-1 away from Houghton Country Arena this season.
-Junior Connor Hannon leads the team with eight goals and is tied with sophomore Teddy Randell with 12 points.
-Randell leads the team with 10 assists.
-Junior Marcus Gloss has a 3.27 goals-against-average and a .908 save percentage.
-The Lions have been outscored 30-10 in the third period.

Series History: The Saints are a perfect 7-0 at Mars Lakeview Arena against the Lions … The teams split last season which each on winning their home ice.
 
Looking Ahead: The Saints will host the University of St. Thomas in the regular season on Tuesday at Mars Lakeview Arena. The game is a make-up of the contest that was postponed due to weather over the Thanksgiving weekend.
