ROCHESTER, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica softball team won a pair of games to open its 2020 season on Saturday, defeating Mount Mary University (Wis.) 5-3 in eight innings and Blackburn College (Ill.) 7-3 in the second game of the Luther College (Iowa) Dome Tournament.
CSS 5, Mount Mary 3 (F/8)
The Saints began their season by plating two runs in the top of the first on an Olivia Howe (Scandia, Minn./Forest Lake HS) two-run single that brought in Nicale Anders and Hannah Thul (Superior, Wis./Superior HS).
The Blue Angels (1-4) were able to score an unearned run in the third inning, but the score remained 2-1 until two outs in the bottom of the seventh. With Mount Mary down to its final out, it would get a RBI single to tie the contest at 2-2 and the send the game to extra innings.

In the top of the eighth, CSS got a big, two-out, two-run single from Josie Fourre (Albany, Minn./Albany HS) to score both Thul and Autumn Siers (Superior, Wis./Superior HS) and make it 4-2. Mara Seurer (New Prague, Minn./New Prague HS) followed with another RBI-single to plate Fourre and extend the lead to 5-2.
In the bottom frame, the Blue Angels loaded the bases with no outs. After an infield fly for the first round, they got a run-scoring single to make it 5-3. Mount Mary would then get doubled off on a fly ball to right fielder Megan Hautajarvi (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS) to end the game at 5-3.
Howe and Seurer each had a pair of hits to lead the offense. Howe also scattered 10 hits to earn the win in the pitcher's circle.
