MANKATO, Minn. (
csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's basketball team led for much of Saturday's Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) game, but top-seeded Bethany Lutheran College used a 9-0 run with less than six minutes remaining and ultimately pulled away to win by a final of 92-82.
How It Happened
The Saints fell behind early in the first few minutes of the half, but would gain the lead after a made three pointer by
Quinn Fischer (Esko, Minn./Esko HS) to go up 5-4. The Vikings (21-6) regained the early lead before
Nick Carlson (Canyon, Minn./South Ridge HS) made the next five points to give the Saints a 10-7 lead four minutes into the half. CSS would go on a 19-12 run over the next six minutes to gain a commendable 29-19 lead over Bethany. The Vikings made a strong 18-8 run of their own to tie the game up 37-37 with just under five minutes left in the half. Two more ties in the next minute and a half would lead to CSS regaining the lead for the remainder of the half enhancing their lead back up to six points heading into half with the 49-43 lead.
St. Scholastica came out of the break to extend its lead to nine points within the first minute of the second half to lead 52-43. BLC responded with a 12-4 run in the next three minutes to get within one point at 56-55. CSS would reignite their lead with a 14-6 run to bring the Saints' lead up to 70-61 with nine and a half minutes left in the game. Bethany Lutheran diminished the Saints lead in a one minute 7-0 run to get the score back within two at 74-72. BLC would tie the game up at 76-76 with 5:22 left in the game and would not look back. St. Scholastica would only manage to score six points in the final 5:58 of the game with Bethany Lutheran ending the game with 16 points. St. Scholastica would fall to Bethany Lutheran by a score of 92-82.
Top Performers
Jack Silgen (Crosby, Minn./Crosby-Ironton HS (St. Thomas)) and
Jarod Wilken (Annandale, Minn./Annandale HS) recorded double-doubles on the night with Silgen scoring 22 points and grabbing 10 rebounds and Wilken scoring 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Collin Anderson (Eagan, Minn./Eagan HS) added 16 points in the loss.
