FOND DU LAC, Wis. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's hockey team responded from its tie with Marian University (Wis.) on Friday to defeat the Sabres 5-1 on Saturday to close the regular season.
 
How it Happened
The first period went by scoreless and it remained 0-0 for over half of the second period before Rachel Anderson (Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View HS) put the Saints on the board with seven minutes to go in the period. Taylor Thompson (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo HS) and Tessa Lowry (Calgary, Alberta/Edge School) had the assists. Mariah Haedrich (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown HS) added to the lead with four minutes left in the period with assists from Taylor Murray (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake HS) and Emily Sabol (New Prague, Minn./New Prague HS) to make it 2-0 at the second intermission.
 
The Sabres (4-19-2, 2-12-2 NCHA) cut the lead in half to start the third period with a goal less than four minutes in. However, the Saints controlled the final eight minutes of the period as Anderson netted her second of the day to make it 3-1. Thompson and Lauryn Hull (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly HS) had the assists. Abby Pohlkamp (Baxter, Minn./Brainerd HS) scored less than a minute later to make it 4-1. She added another with less than a minute remaining to make the final 5-1. Ali Ratzloff (Rochester, Minn./Rochester Lourdes HS) and Kayla Kasel (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake HS) had assists on Pohlkamp's goals.
 
Goaltending
Lexi Thomeczek (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph Academy (St. Louis AAA Blues)) made 21 saves to earn the win, while Molly Gross had 40 saves for the Sabres.
 
Up Next
The Saints (12-9-4, 9-4-3 NCHA) ended up fourth in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) standings as Aurora University (Ill.) defeated St. Norbert College (Wis.) 4-0 on Saturday to clinch the No. 3 seed. That means the Saints will travel to Aurora next weekend to open the Slaats Cup Playoffs. The two-game series is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday beginning at noon each day.
