MANKATO, Minn. (
csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's basketball team traveled to Bethany Lutheran College for an Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) matchup on Saturday afternoon. The Saints came out of the tip with offensive urgency, but the Vikings matched the intensity and go on runs in the first and second quarters to hold a steady lead and held the lead for the remainder of the game, defeating the Saints 85-61.
How It Happened
The Saints jumped out to a quick 5-4 lead after a bucket by
Morgan Anderson (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake HS (UW-Superior)) and a three by
Alison Huber (Ashland, Wis./Ashland HS (Hibbing CC)). The Vikings (17-2, 10-1 UMAC) responded by going on an 11-5 run in the next three minutes to gain a 15-10 lead. Bethany Lutheran would continue their run going up 21-13 to end the first quarter.
The Vikings started the second quarter on a 9-2 run in the first three and a half minutes to go up 30-15. CSS made a 9-5 run of their own to bring their deficit back to 35-24. The Vikings would close out the half by extending their lead to 42-29 heading into the break.
The second half started with a 9-4 run for Bethany Lutheran to go up 51-33 with seven minutes left in the quarter. The Vikings extended their lead to as much as 21 before Huber scored eight straight points to bring the Saints deficit down to 13 at 54-41. Bethany led 64-49 at the end of three quarters.
The Vikings extended their lead in the fourth quarter and went on to win 85-61.
Top Performers
Kaylee Kennedy (Littlefork, Minn./Littlefork-Big Falls HS) led the Saints in scoring with 24 points and A. Huber added 13 points.
Christina Furey (Lake Charles, La./Homeschooled) led the way with nine rebounds in the loss.
