HOUGHTON, Mich. (
csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's and women's nordic ski teams took part in the long distance mass start classic races on Sunday as part of the U.S. Championships on the Michigan Tech Trails.
Men
The men's race distance was 30km with sophomore
Emil Book Bratbak (Asgardstrand, Norway/Lillehammer) once again leading the way in 24
th overall with a time of 1:22:20. Fellow sophomore
Nick Matelich (Bozeman, Mont./Bozeman HS (Montana State)) finished 40
th overall in a time of 1:24:52. Junior
Tamer Mische-Richter (Bloomington, Minn./John F. Kennedy HS) was 62
nd overall in 1:29:03. The final Saint competing in the senior division was junior
Anders Braaten (Minnesota City, Minn./Winona HS), who placed 84
th overall.
Three Saints competed in the junior race, which was a 10km distance. Sophomore
Gus Schatzlein (Savage, Minn./Prior Lake HS) led the way in that event in 19
th place with a time of 31:11. Freshman
Nathan Smoller (Montpelier, Vt./U-32 HS) was 68
th in a time of 35:58. The final Saint was
Joe Lynch (St. Anthony Village, Minn./St. Anthony HS) in 93
rd overall.
Women
The women's race distance was 20km and the three Saints competing all finished together with senior
Nicole Gilman (Manitowish Waters, Wis./Lakeland Union HS) in 51
st with a time of 1:17:03. Junior
Samantha Benzing (Boise, Idaho/Boise HS) was 52
nd with a time of 1:17:04. First-year skier
Maja Petersson (Solleftea, Sweden/Solleftea Gymnasium) was 53
rd in a time of 1:17:20.
Sophomore
Rana Kraftson (Bayport, Minn./Stillwater HS) was the only Saint to compete in the junior race, which was 7.5km and she placed 72
nd with a time of 28:21.
