DULUTH, Minn. (
csssaints.com) – Trine University (Ind.) scored with less than seven minutes remaining in regulation to tie the St. Scholastica women's hockey team 1-1 in Saturday's Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) series finale at Mars Lakeview Arena.
How it Happened
Unlike Friday night's contest, the Saints would have the edge in shots on Saturday by a 28-23 margin. However, just like Friday, the first period went by scoreless with CSS holding a 14-11 edge in shots. Both teams went 0-for-1 on the power-play in the period.
Four minutes into the second period, the Thunder (7-6-4, 3-5-2 NCHA) would be called for penalty, but the Saints controlled the puck and brought on an extra-attacker. The Saints would score on the delayed penalty as
Lauryn Hull (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly HS) found the net from a tough angle on the left side of the net to make it 1-0.
Paige Forsman (Cokato, Minn./Dassel-Cokato HS) had the assist.
St. Scholastica remained in front 1-0 with less than 10 minutes remaining in regulation when Trine was able to score its first goal of the weekend off a rebound to tie the contest at 1-1 with 6:38 remaining. The Thunder then had a power-play in the final five minutes of regulation, but nothing came of it and the game went to overtime.
In overtime, the Saints would draw a penalty and have a power-play, but only got one shot on goal as the game ended in a 1-1 tie.
Goaltending
Lexi Thomeczek (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph Academy (St. Louis AAA Blues)) made 22 saves for the Saints and stopped 70 of 71 shots for the weekend. Molly Scarborough had 27 saves for Trine.
