DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's hockey team was out-shot 48-14, but senior goaltender Lexi Thomeczek (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph Academy (St. Louis AAA Blues)) stopped all 48 shots as the Saints defeated Trine University (Ind.) 2-0 Friday night at Mars Lakeview Arena in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) action.

How it Happened
After a scoreless first period, which saw the Thunder have a 12-7 edge in shots, CSS committed a penalty early in the second period and Thomeczek had to make seven saves while being a skater down.

With less than nine remaining in the period, Taylor Murray (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake HS) carried the puck up the ice and drilled a slap shot from the slot, which beat the goaltender in the upper left corner to make it 1-0 Saints. Lily Holtz (Austin, Minn./Austin HS) recorded her first collegiate point with the assist.

Just 20 seconds later, Greta Nundahl (New Brighton, Minn./Irondale HS) received the puck in the opposite slot and beat the goaltender in the upper right corner to make it 2-0 Saints. Paige Forsman (Cokato, Minn./Dassel-Cokato HS) and Jessie Ketola (Silver Bay, Minn. /William Kelly HS) had the assists. For Ketola, it was her first collegiate point.

After the second goal, the Saints committed back-to-back penalties as the Thunder had a 5-on-3 advantage for 50 seconds, but Thomeczek and the Saints stood tall as the game remained 2-0 heading to the third period. St. Scholastica was out-shot 22-5 in the second period.

The Saints were out-shot 14-2 in the third period, but Trine could not break Thomeczek as the Saints took game one of the series 2-0.
