DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's basketball team welcomed Finlandia University (Mich.) to The Reif for a nonconference matchup Wednesday night. The Saints would trail for most of the game, but took the lead late before a Finlandia 3-pointer was enough to down the Saints 57-55.

How It Happened
The Saints got on the board with a layup by Morgan Anderson (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake HS (UW-Superior)) one minute into the game. St. Scholastica would be held scoreless for the next four minutes with Finlandia (9-11) jumping out to an 8-2 lead. Christina Furey (Lake Charles, La./Homeschooled) ended the scoring drought after an offensive rebound and put back to get the score to 8-4. The final Saints bucket of the quarter came with 30 seconds left when Karli Skog (Crosslake, Minn./Pequot Lakes HS (Jamestown)) hit a three to trim the lead to 11-7 in favor of Finlandia.

The second quarter started out with Kaylee Kennedy (Littlefork, Minn./Littlefork-Big Falls HS) getting to the line and making both free throws to trim the Finlandia 11-9. The Saints would battle back within one on two different occasions, but couldn't capitalize with the Lions going on runs of seven and six points in the last five minutes of the quarter to head into half with the lead 27-21.

Two buckets by Kennedy started out the third quarter to bring the Saints within two at 27-25. Once again the Lions responded with short runs as the Saints only got within four the rest of the period. Going into the fourth Finlandia led 40-34.

A Skog three pointer brought the Saints within three at 40-37. The Lions maintained the lead and led by five with three minutes remaining. After Isabel Romay (Vadnais Heights, Minn./Concordia Academy) free throws cut the deficit to three, the Saints got the ball back and Emma Schmidt (Alexandria, Minn./Alexandria HS) drained a 3-pointers to tie the game at 52-52 with 2:30 left.

Finlandia would make one-of-two free throws on the other end, but CSS took its first lead of the game on an Isabel Romay (Vadnais Heights, Minn./Concordia Academy) layup with 1:30 left.

A free throw by Schmidt would extend the St. Scholastica lead to 55-53 with 22 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter. Finlandia would hit a three on the next possession to go up 56-55 with over 10 seconds remaining. After CSS committed a turnover, a free throw for the Lions made it a 57-55 with the Saints holding the final possession. A last second jumper for the Saints would rim out giving Finlandia the 57-55 victory.
