Men’s Basketball Remains at Home this Week

DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's basketball team has a pair of games at the Reif Gymnasium this week with a non-conference contest against Finlandia University (Mich.) on Wednesday and conference matchup against Martin Luther College on Saturday.

What You Need to Know about the Saints:
-The Saints wrapped up the first half of conference play on Saturday with a 91-75 home loss to Bethany Lutheran College.
-CSS currently sits fourth in the conference standings, three games behind leader University of Wisconsin-Superior and two game behind Bethany and the University of Northwestern (Minn.).
-The Saints are tied with Crown College in the loss column for fourth and both teams are three games clear of the rest of the conference.
-In the second half of the conference slate, the Saints will have just three of the remaining eight league games away from The Reif.
-Senior Collin Anderson (Eagan, Minn./Eagan HS) continues to lead the team in scoring at 15.5 points per game.
-Anderson was held to nine points in Saturday's loss to Bethany. CSS is 1-6 this season when Anderson fails to reach double-figures in scoring.
-Anderson needs 12 more points to become the seventh player in program history to reach 1,300 career points.
-Sophomore Nick Carlson (Canyon, Minn./South Ridge HS) is second on the team, averaging 13.9 points per game and is coming off his third-highest scoring output of the season of 19 points in Saturday's defeat.
-Junior Jarod Wilken (Annandale, Minn./Annandale HS) leads the conference with 23 blocked shots
-St. Scholastica is 1-9 this season when it fails to score at least 40 points in the second half.
 
What You Need to Know about Finlandia:
Record: 0-16
-The Lions are still in search of their first win of the season as they are one of four winless NCAA Division III teams.
-Finlandia ranks last in the nation in field goal percentage (.367) and in scoring margin, getting beat by an average of 31.5 points per game.
-The Lions have only lost three games this season by less than 10 points.
-The Lions rank fifth in the country with 563, 3-point field goal attempts.
-Dylan Underwood leads the team in scoring, averaging 19.2 points per game.
-Kaleb Kirksey averages a team-best 6.6 rebounds per game.
 
Series Record: CSS leads 28-8 (Last Meeting: 92-85 (ot) CSS – 11/26/2019)
 
Series History: The Saints needed overtime in the first meeting of the season in Hancock, Michigan in November, but prevailed 92-85 … Carlson recorded a career-high 37 points in the win … CSS is 16-1 all-time at home against the Lions with the one loss occurring in February of 2003.
 
What You Need to Know about Martin Luther:
Record: 4-11, 1-6 UMAC
-The Knights will host the University of Minnesota Morris on Wednesday, before traveling to face the Saints on Saturday.
-MLC has played well in its last three games with a non-conference win over Concordia College-Moorhead, then a two-point road loss at Crown before traveling to defeat Northland College on Sunday by 12 points.
-The Knights lead the UMAC with 9.6 steals per game and with a +2.9 turnover margin.
-Martin Luther holds opponents to a conference-best 41.1 percent shooting from the field.
-However, the Knights averaging a conference-worst 69.6 points per game.
-MLC has made just 118 free throws, which is third-fewest in NCAA Division III.
-Austin DeNoyer leads the team in scoring, averaging 11.3 points per game.
-Ethan Eisenmann averages a team-best 6.5 rebounds per game.
-Ian Paulsen leads the conference, averaging 1.62 blocked shots per game.
 
Series Record: CSS leads 46-18 (Last Meeting: 82-61 CSS – 1/8/2020)
 
Series History: The Saints have won 14 straight over the Knights, including a 21-point victory in New Ulm a couple of weeks ago … CSS is 25-4 all-time against MLC in Duluth with its last loss coming in January of 2004.
 
Looking Ahead: The Saints will be at North Central University (Minn.) for UMAC matchup on Wednesday, January 29.
