Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Women’s Hockey Defeats Stevens Point Behind Thomeczek’s 40 Saves

Notables
-15th career shutout for Thomeczek
-CSS opponents are 0-for-19 on the power-play in the last seven games

DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – Taylor Thompson's (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo HS) first period goal stood up as Lexi Thomeczek (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph Academy (St. Louis AAA Blues)) made 40 saves to lead the St. Scholastica women's hockey team to a 1-0 victory over the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Saturday evening at Mars Lakeview Arena.

How it Happened
After a 2-2 tie on Friday night, in which the Saints rallied from a two-goal deficit, it was the Saints jumping on top first. Moments after Thompson just missed a golden opportunity to score, she was rewarded later in the shift as Rachel Anderson (Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View HS) found Thompson, who in turn, found the net to make it 1-0 CSS with less than six minutes remaining in the first period.

Anderson had a chance to extend the lead in the second period, but her wrap-around attempt struck off the pipe. The Pointers (7-5-3) had a chance to equalize late in the second period as they had 52 seconds with a 5-on-3 advantage. However, Thomeczek came up big with a few great saves and the Saints were able to kill-off the power-play and maintain the 1-0 lead after two periods. UWSP outshot the Saints 17-4 in the period.

Stevens Point kept the pressure on in the third period with a 13-4 shot advantage. The Pointers pulled the goaltender in the final minute, but could not get a shot on goal with the extra skater as CSS prevailed 1-0.

Goaltending
Thomeczek's 40-save effort gave her her second shutout in her last three starts. Olivia Schultz had 16 saves for the Pointers.

Up Next
The Saints (5-6-1) will be away from Mars Lakeview next weekend as they resume Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) action at conference leader Adrian College (Mich.). First game of the series will be Friday at 7 p.m. (ET).
