How it Happened
The opening set saw the Saints hold a 23-21 lead, only to see the Yellowjackets (1-4) record the next four points to take the set 25-23.
CSS opened up a 16-11 lead in the second set, but UWS responded with a 6-0 run to take the lead. However, the Saints would hold on thanks to back-to-back kills by
Jessica Remer (Grand Forks, N.D./Sacred Heart HS) and
Morgan Lohmiller (Pequot Lakes, Minn./Pequot Lakes HS) to take the second set 26-24.
The third set saw Superior ahead for much of the set and it looked to be on its way with a 22-14 advantage. The Saints, however, crawled back in and made it 23-20. UWS then had four set points, but a pair of
Brooke Schermann (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Totino-Grace HS) kills and a
Haley Rohwer (Norwood Young America, Minn./Mayer Lutheran HS) kill got the Saints even at 24-24. CSS then had the advantage with four set points, but Superior fought them all off. In the end, a service ace and kill by the Yellowjackets gave UWS the set 30-28.
Despite the tough third set loss, the Saints responded by controlling the fourth set as they never trailed to force a fifth-and-deciding set with a 25-15 victory.
The fifth set would have nine ties alone. The Yellowjackets stayed a step ahead of the Saints through the first half of the set as they had an 8-7 lead at the changeover. After the changeover, the Saints recorded three straight points to take 10-8 lead, its first lead of the set. Later in the set a block by Lohmiller and Rohwer gave the Saints match point at 14-12. The Yellowjackets would survive one long rally, but a Lohmiller kill gave the Saints the match with a kill to make the final tally 15-13.
