How it Happened
The Saints got off to a slow start as St. Kate's earned the first four points of the match. The streaky first set would see 11 ties and seven lead changes as each team would go in short spurts. The Wildcats (8-5) would have a pair of set points at 24-22, but a
Haley Rohwer (Norwood Young America, Minn./Mayer Lutheran HS) kill, followed by a St. Kate's error tied the set at 24-24. Another Wildcat hitting error was followed by an
Espi Austvold (Spicer, Minn./New London-Spicer HS) service ace to give the Saints the set 26-24.
CSS had an early lead in the second set, but St. Catherine took control midway thru with a 10-1 run to even the match at a set apiece 25-19.
The Saints responded in the third set with a pair of 5-0 runs and then had four straight points to cap the set by a score of 25-17.
St. Scholastica never trailed in the fourth, leading 20-10 at one point. However, St. Kate's battled back to get within 23-20. CSS would be able to get the final two points off a
Brooke Schermann (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Totino-Grace HS) kill and then a block assist from Schermann and
Madissen Burns (Watertown, Minn./Watertown-Mayer HS) to finish the match 25-20.
