Notables

-Morris has won nine straight over CSS

MORRIS, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica volleyball team dropped both of its matches on Saturday in three sets, first in its conference opener to the University of Minnesota Morris and then to non-conference opponent St. Olaf College.

UMM 3, CSS 0
In the conference opener for both teams, the reigning UMAC Tournament champions Cougars (7-8) proved to be too much for the Saints winning 25-19, 25-16 and 27-25.

The first set was back-and-forth with the Saints holding an 8-7 lead. However, Morris then won 12 of the next 15 points to open up a sizable margin. Morris won the first set 25-19. The Cougars had a 6-2 lead in the second set and lengthened that lead throughout the set to win 25-16.

The Saints battled in the third set despite trailing early. CSS led 23-22, but then had to fight off two match points before succumbing on the third match point and falling 27-25.

Brooke Schermann (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Totino-Grace HS) had a team-high 10 kills, followed by Emily Udermann (Rosemount, Minn./Rosemount HS) and Jessica Remer (Grand Forks, N.D./Sacred Heart HS) with seven apiece. Espi Austvold (Spicer, Minn./New London-Spicer HS) had 16 assists and Alcia Draper (Williams, Minn./Lake of the Woods HS) a team-high 19 digs.

St. Olaf 3, CSS 0
The Saints tried to salvage a split for the day against St. Olaf, but the Oles (15-3) were able to down CSS in three sets 25-18, 25-14, 29-27.

The Oles controlled the first two sets, trailing only early in both sets. In fact, the Saints scored the first three points in the second set, only to see St. Olaf record the next 13 points.

The third set was tightly contested with 17 ties and nine lead changes. CSS trailed 23-19, but got three straight points to get within one. The Saints then fought off four match points and had a set point at 27-26, but had three straight hitting errors as the Oles took the match in three sets.

Schermann once again led the Saints with 11 kills. Katie Brostrom (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake HS) had 12 assists and 17 digs. Draper had a team-best 20 digs.
