csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica volleyball team finished the University of Northwestern (Minn.) Labor Day Tournament 2-1 after splitting action on Saturday.
CSS 3, Concordia 1
The Saints opened play on Saturday with a four-set win over Concordia College-Moorhead by scores of 25-21, 17-25, 25-19 and 25-12.
CSS had its best hitting percentage of the match in the first set at .250 as it was the closest contested set of the match with eight ties and three lead changes. With the score at 20-19, the Saints recorded three straight points to extend the lead. Then a short time later, back-to-back kills by
Haley Rohwer (Norwood Young America, Minn./Mayer Lutheran HS) and
Madissen Burns (Watertown, Minn./Watertown-Mayer HS) gave the Saints the 25-21 set win. Rohwer led the team with six kills in the set.
In the second set, the Cobbers (1-1) used a 10-2 run midway thru to even the match at a set apiece 25-17.
The Saints opened up a 9-2 lead in the pivotal third set, but Concordia responded and cut it to 13-12. CSS then used a 6-1 run to pull away and take the third set 25-19.
Jessica Remer (Grand Forks, N.D./Sacred Heart HS) led the way with six kills in the set.
St. Scholastica carried that momentum into the fourth set, recording 14 consecutive points off the service of
Brooke Schermann (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Totino-Grace HS) and completed the win over the Cobbers with a 25-12 set victory.
Remer led the Saints with 15 kills, followed by Schermann with 11 and Burns with 10. Schermann also led the team with 23 digs and recorded six service aces.
Katie Brostrom (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake HS) had a team-high 26 assists.
SNC 3, CSS 2
In the final match, the Saints held a two-set lead over St. Norbert College (Wis.), only to see the Green Knights rally and win the match in five sets 22-25, 16-25, 25-20, 25-14, 17-15.
CSS was strong in the first two sets with a .289 hitting percentage in each. The Saints broke a 22-22 tie in the opening set, by recording the next three points to take the set. Remer had six kills in the set. The Saints were also out in front for much of the second set to take a commanding lead.
CSS then led 18-17 in the third set, before the Green Knights (2-1) went on a 7-1 run to take the third set. St. Norbert then never trailed in set four to force a fifth-and-decisive set.
The Saints trailed 13-10 in the fifth set, but got the next three points to tie it. They then fought off two match points, but could not fight off a third as St. Norbert prevailed 17-15.
Schermann and Remer finished with 15 kills apiece. Brostrom had 24 assists, while
Espi Austvold (Spicer, Minn./New London-Spicer HS) added 21 assists.
Alcia Draper (Williams, Minn./Lake of the Woods HS) had a team-high 23 digs.
