ST. PAUL (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica volleyball team took down Buena Vista University (Iowa) in three sets on Friday by scores of the 25-23, 25-15 and 25-20 to open the season at the University of Northwestern (Minn.) Labor Day Tournament.

How it Happened
The first set would feature 12 ties and three lead changes. CSS trailed 22-20 in the set before a kill by Brooke Schermann (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Totino-Grace HS) was followed by a Buena Vista error. Then down 23-22, the Saints got three consecutive kills, two from Schermann and another from Jessica Remer (Grand Forks, N.D./Sacred Heart HS) to take the opening set 25-23. Schermann had seven kills in that first set.

The Saints got out to an early six-point lead in the second set thanks to a good service run by Katie Brostrom (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake HS). The margin never got closer than six the rest of the way as St. Scholastica took a two-set lead by a score of 25-15. Morgan Lohmiller (Pequot Lakes, Minn./Pequot Lakes HS) had four kills to pace the Saints in the second set.

Buena Vista held the lead early in the third set, but the Saints went on a 5-0 run to take a 13-11 lead. CSS used another 5-0 run later in the set to take a 19-15 lead, but would be forced to call a timeout with the score at 21-20. The timeout paid off, as the Saints recorded the next four points to close out the match by a 25-20 final. Haley Rohwer (Norwood Young America, Minn./Mayer Lutheran HS) led the Saints with five kills in the final set.

Top Performers
Schermann finished with a team-high 11 kills, followed by Rohwer with 10 kills. Espi Austvold (Spicer, Minn./New London-Spicer HS) had 27 assists and Alcia Draper (Williams, Minn./Lake of the Woods HS) led the way with 14 digs.
