DULUTH, Minn. (
csssaints.com) – For the first time, the St. Scholastica baseball team dropped its first game of an Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Tournament as the University of Wisconsin-Superior never trailed in a 6-3 triumph over the Saints Thursday night at Wade Stadium.
How it Happened
The Yellowjackets (17-19) who won earlier in the day against Crown College 4-1, got a two-run home run from Cory Albertson in the top of the first. The Saints got one of those runs back in the bottom of the first on a
Conor Wollenzien (North Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS) sacrifice fly that brought in
Brad Fossum (Sturgeon Lake, Minn./Moose Lake HS (Concordia-St. Paul)).
It remained 2-1 until the top of the fourth when a CSS error with the bases loaded allowed two UWS runners to score. A third run then came in on a sacrifice fly to extend the Superior lead to 5-1.
Wollenzien had a RBI single in the fifth to make it 5-2, but would leave the bases loaded in the inning. After UWS added a run in the seventh,
Joey Zwak (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) made it 6-3 with a RBI single in the eighth. However, the Saints went down in order in the ninth to make the final 6-3.
Top Performers
Grant Taival (Mahtomedi, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) allowed only one run in five innings of relief, while striking out four in the no-decision. Braeden Barr went the distance for UWS, striking out six. Barr also led the team with a pair of hits.
Fossum and Zwak each had two hits for the Saints.
