DULUTH, Minn. (
csssaints.com) – For the third consecutive year, the St. Scholastica women's tennis team defeated the University of Northwestern (Minn.) in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Tournament Championship on Saturday by an 8-1 margin at the Longview Tennis Club.
Doubles
The Saints took a commanding lead early by sweeping all three doubles matches. The No. 3 duo of
Brynne Hauer (Duluth, Minn. /Duluth East HS) and
Madilyn Jankila (Eveleth, Minn. /Eveleth-Gilbert HS) won 8-4. Then the No. 1 team of
Elise Hauer (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) and
Elizabeth Fink (Rochester, Minn./Rochester Century HS) prevailed 8-3. Finally, the No. 2 team of
Sara Wennerstrand (Baxter, Minn. /Brainerd HS (Saint Benedict)) and
Katelyn Rice (Eveleth, Minn./Eveleth-Gilbert HS) won 8-3 to complete the doubles sweep.
Singles
The Saints then won each of the first five singles matches to finish. Wennerstrand was the first to finish at the No. 2 spot by scores of 6-0, 6-1. B. Hauer was the next winner to clinch the dual for the Saints with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at the No. 4 spot.
Rice also won in straight sets at the No. 3 spot by scores of 6-2, 6-1. E. Hauer rallied from a set down to win at the No. 1 position 2-6, 6-2, (10-2). The final CSS winner on the day was Fink, who also won in a third set super-breaker 6-3, 5-7, (10-5).
