-Rice wins eighth straight singles match and 50th victory of her career
VIRGINIA, Minn. (
csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's tennis team defeated the University of Minnesota Morris 8-1 Wednesday night in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Tournament semifinals.
Doubles
The Saints opened the evening by winning two of the three doubles matches. The No. 2 team of
Katelyn Rice (Eveleth, Minn./Eveleth-Gilbert HS) and
Sara Wennerstrand (Baxter, Minn. /Brainerd HS (Saint Benedict)), along with the No. 3 team of
Brynne Hauer (Duluth, Minn. /Duluth East HS) and
Madilyn Jankila (Eveleth, Minn. /Eveleth-Gilbert HS), both won 8-0. The Cougars were able to get a point at the No. 1 spot, winning in a tiebreak 8-7 (7-5).
Singles
The Saints controlled singles play, winning all six matches in straight sets. Wennerstrand got things started with a 6-1, 6-0 win at the No. 2 spot.
Elise Hauer (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) recorded the next win at the No. 1 position 6-1, 6-3. Rice won 6-2, 6-3 at the No. 3 spot to clinch the dual for the Saints.
Elizabeth Fink (Rochester, Minn./Rochester Century HS) won 6-4, 6-1 at the No. 4 spot and B. Hauer dropped just one game in a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 5. The final winner was
Taylor Hays (Altoona, Wis./Altoona HS) at the No. 6 spot, who blanked her opponent 6-0, 6-0.

The Saints (16-6) will face the University of Northwestern (Minn.) for the UMAC Championship on Saturday scheduled at this time to be at Longview Tennis Club at 4 p.m.
